Why He LEFT The Netherlands For A Life In Spain (Dutch Living Abroad)
For many, living in the Netherlands would be a dream, but for some Dutch people, moving out of the country is a goal. I met one of these people, Tristan, during a trip I made to Spain last summer. So I decided to come back in order to learn more about his story living in Spain, culture differences he's encountered, and his life as an entrepreneur.
You can find more on Tristan's wine tasting company here: sommeliertristan.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwuJ2xBhA3EiwAMVjkVK3r5V0vawwBDjJ8Cadomc3saKqElxZaBlWDalcvNGe9xMO5tD42rRoC3DYQAvD_BwE

    When Dutch people talk about "the Belgians", they actually mean the Flemish (the 60% who speaks Dutch), though about 40% speaks French. The French have a similar issue where they think of the Belgians as the ones that speak French. You only interviewed the Flemish people in this video.

    I remember the Bijlmer being build and some of my family living there. Right from the start the public's opinion was that the DESIGN WAS ALL WRONG. You had these big apartment buildings and only one (small!) shopping centre at one end. Another example; Mothers with prams had to walk three or four blocks to get to the shop; utterly stupid! There were not sufficient bus stops and coming home in winter and having to walk in long empty semi dark streets...What were those architects thinking?! People moved out as soon as they could. Then Suriname became independent and ironically lots of Surinamers preferred to move to the land of their 'colonizers' and the Bijlmer was free to accommadate them. That was when it turned into a ghetto; the Bijlmer really became a dangerous place. Too many men without a job is always a recipe for danger..... That terrible plane accident was the beginning of a positive turnaround.(Bless those people who died in the crash). Blocks were taken down, the whole place was redesigned and I am so glad to see and hear what it has turned into! I am a migrant myself these days in Australia.Next time I come across I want to go to the Bijlmer and the markets; it looks fabulous!

    You are doing an excellent job Sam! Getting strange people to open up like that and feel safe and comfortable enough to talk about their real feelings, while being recorded on camera, for a UA-cam channel they probably don't even know, can only mean one thing: the interviewer knows what he's doing. Hope you'll soon be able to do this full time! You really add something new and refreshing to the world of media (including TV).

    You are wrong. The way many Dutch use English is pretty similar (or the same) to how many Germans used it, for instance 'making a photo'. And the usage of 'making a photo' is actually CORRECT and 'taking a photo' is just like another flavor - it expresses a more passive approach. 'Making a photo' IS CORRECT ENGLISH (it is just a less used 'with more focus on the one who takes the photo'/the more active subject)! And keep in mind that English is based on old German/Dutch (simplified put) anyway and what you have in many cases is just a convention or over time slightly different paths things get expressed. Its a bit like that English also knows 'Hound' (like in Greyhound) which is like the German 'Hund' or the Dutch 'Hond'. And if people who are not aware about that try to sell WRONG that it has to be translated as 'dog' then they only show a lack of knowledge about the language family. Even worse: this lack of knowledge about the own and the other language of the same family leads to making it more difficult as necessary to learn the other language, because in the case of awareness one can easily look for common patterns while the one who is not aware about that also usually doesnt know the own language and mistakes habits with factual rules (and even miss the most obvious common words). And because of that you can use in ALL three languages 'making a photo' AND 'taking a photo'. THIS is correct and everything else is bullshit (again: only a used habit is wrongly chosen as law!). German for instance is like English a mixture of a West Germanic base with (especially due to academic/science terminologies) a lot of Latin/Greek in it - all of that bridges the languages and people who are aware about that could even talk with each other by just more wisely choosing words/sentences - WITHOUT EVER LEARNING/KNOWING THE OTHER LANGUAGE! Thats why everyone who knows English also can immediately underrstand German sentences like 'Peter und Anna studieren Medizin und Biologie in der Humboldt Universitaet in Berlin'! And again: there is a difference between 'wrong' and less used or just unknown ways how to express something! Habits are no rules! In all languages things could also be expressed in other ways and still are absolutely legit. And thats why you have a lot of wrong examples used as 'mistakes'. If you labeled that as 'uncommon' it was much more accurate ...

    I did gymnasium β in the old system before the "mammoet" and spent the last two decades of my career lecturing at an American university, in part freshman chemistry. My observations from that is that American kids learn less than half in highschool than I had done. And that was a real problem in Chem 101. Suddenly they actually had to do something called studying. Some excelled in finding that extremely UNFAIR. Especially my black students.

    I see where you’re coming from, but the other side of the coin is that the Dutch culture and the general behavior of Dutch people makes our country the way it is. You may hear us complain about everything including the enormous tax rates we have to pay but we that money keeps our streets clean and our public transport a viable option instead of cars. We don’t take anything granted here, we work and pay for every comfort we and our guests enjoy!

    Interesting; from 1 church to 24 churches, quite a shift from Catholic to Protestant, and how this shows differences (small) in their religious (Christian) beliefs, that came from this - money can shift religious beliefs. For a "lazy and relaxed" country Spain has better infrastructure and is more organized than the Netherlands in many aspects. How is that even possible? Just look at the city of Valencia, nothing in the Netherlands comes close. Ummm...I see a lot of "cultural supremacism" that is not backed by facts but by ignorance and prejudice. To begin with, the Netherlands are a mini-country more than 10 times smaller than Spain. Spain is much more diverse in terms of culture, weather, geography, there's simply no comparison.

    • @exploringtheforeign
      @exploringtheforeign 21 день тому

      Woah woah, when did anyone say lazy? And relaxed is not per se a bad thing; it's just pointing out a difference in comparison to Dutch culture, but wasn't meant in a way that one is more supreme than the other. Lastly, I love Spain, and Tristan does as well, clearly. So I think you got the video wrong🙏🏾

    2:08 Right man, we don't have "rules, punctuality, structure" in Spain. But of course, the fantastic country of the Netherlands does have all of that. You are right, we are the lazybones of the world and that's why our country does not function and is submerged in chaos and destruction. My advice: leave this Spanish nightmare behind and never come back, thanks.

It starts with one friendly " Hello" and that is all you need to go out in the world. Love the perspective you're giving us in your video's. Keep up the good work.
